FreshFest Vol.3: The Essence of Hip-Hop

What happens when funky fusion bands, lyrical MCs, soulful songstresses, and Grammy nominated producers all pile in a room together? We’ll tell ya! An electrifying array of raw talent explodes on the scene. Fresh Fest Vol.3 was all about showcasing the newest, freshest underground talent. Each performance, in the words of Philly’s own Jill Scott, "represented in the fashion of the truly  gifted".

The first few acts were dominated by a ferociously talented up and coming MC by the name of Aime
At just 23 years of age the words woven by this thorough lyrical genius penetrated the hearts and minds of everyone in attendance. The entire Fresh Fest crowd vibed off of Aime’s distinctly dramatic, in-your-face presentation. A fan favorite—and our personal favorite performed their own rendition of "Posted Up" - featuring Beano. Even though Aime and featured artist Beano never performed the song live before, their collaboration was a seamless, seemingly effortless and in sync success!

Beano-The Gentleman
Speaking of success, singer and songwriter Beano is no stranger to staying in sync with a melody. This charismatic Philadelphia native carried the crowd from one note to the next with his soulful vocal skill.
He’s been performing for a number of years now and loves to get the crowd going with his distinct tone and highly developed vocal delivery. A skill that cannot be learned but cultivated and encouraged to grow with patience and practice. Beano’s potential to make it as a successful R&B/hip-hop artist is brilliant!

And now we want you to put your hands up "if you like girls, who like girls, who like girls”  who showed mad crazy love for this funky fresh hip-hop trio that splashed onto the underground scene a mere two years ago. Starting from nothing, this band was one of the most anticipated acts of the night and the performance was beyond brilliant! Fans were packed front and center of Silk City’s venue;
from the back of the club to the front door waiting in anticipation for Ground Up to tear the house down.

This is one of the most lyrically conscious, socially aware groups to come out of Philly. MC band members Azar, Malakai and producer Bij Lincs delivered a series of fan favorites and literally had us begging for more.  This fierce force to be has already released seven (7) mix tapes and has performed for Pennsylvania and Philadelphia area colleges like Temple University, Cheney and West Chester University. In addition to their own shows, they’ve also done openings for Gucci Mane, Meek Mills and Rick Ross. Look out world - they’re coming at you live from the 215 area code and have the talent, creativity and skill to compete in this cut throat competitive music sphere.

Let’s bring it down now . . . slow up the tempo, drop the beat and make things a little more sexy, because Sela’s sultry rock fusion combo is all you need to get your groove on--in a slow and sexy kind of way.
Sela
Seriously, if you’ve never seen or heard Sela perform, get out from under that rock, find out there next gig and treat yourself to this new age, hip hop collaboration. This music is for the Grown ups-- so let the electric guitar move you and the enticing and tempting lyrics of their songs calm and sooth you.

Finally, one of the most highly anticipated acts of the night took place when West Philly’s own Chill Moody stepped on stage.
 A highly energetic, thorough and clean passionate delivery of real hip-hop; his emotions were felt throughout the crowd. A killer combination of fierce, fast and witty, this talented MC was ready to give—and the crowd couldn’t have been more receptive. With cousins, friends and other extended family scattered throughout the room, Chill Moody’s performance proved that he is one of Philly’s most promising up and coming rap artist.

 FreshFest Vol.3 was more than a success, due in part to many of the other talents in attendance. Grammy winning producer Joe Logic was there performing beside Chill Moody. This veteran producer is best known for his remix work on Ushers album Raymond vs. Raymond.

Other Philly talents performing that night was the elegant Dana Starr who sang the hook for Chill Moody’s "She sings to me". Also in attendance was powerful songstress Elle Morris who performed alongside Sela.

This event was more than just a gathering of musicians; it was a movement of truly talented artist all coming together as one; representing what the future holds for the underground artist in Philadelphia.
